Title: AximSlide for v0.11.0
Post by: dp1don on December 30, 2003, 11:45:00 PM
Hello, semi-newbie again...

OK, I've gone and done it... tried to create a new skin...

Actually, a mod of other skins...

Anyway, I call it AximSlide - as it's Slider designed for my Axim X5.

What I tossed:
- Brightness control - doesn't work yet on Axim
- Est Battery Time left - known bug in v0.11.0, it's being worked on.

What I adopted:
- Timmy's Sunrise/Sunset icons
- jhollin's weather, sysinfo and launcher regions (see caveat below)
- Broesel's Moon Phase work

What I added:
- Sunrise/Sunset times now change with each of your weather cities. (Still display in your local time, however - that's a known feature request).
- Clicking on Sunrise/Sunset displays "almanac" for that city - sunrise, sunset, sun elevation, moon phase graphic, moon rise time, moon set time, and percent moon illumination.
- Modified forecasttext.txt to include weather forecast 134: Rain/Snow Showers Early
- Replaced battery, esttime with battery, remainingtime command. Only gives hours, and may not be totally accurate (YMMV).
- Up arrow in balloon starts up, and balloon opens on power-up.

Caveats:
- In your storage paths section, select /SD card first, and /CF Card second. Otherwise, your storage displays in sys-info will not be accurate.
- No images in this post because where I'm working, I don't have an image capture app loaded. I wll post image captures later this evening.

The Zip file contains:
- Aximslide.txt, the skin file
- forecasttext.txt, the updated text forecast file
- All Image icons (From folder Color-3D, with additions)
- All Weather Forecast Icons (Weather.com set)
- All Icon Icons (Birthday, Holday, etc.)

Anyways, it's my first attempt. Please critique...but be gentle, por favor.

Title: Past due tasks show in agenda
Post by: scott51 on January 01, 2004, 07:13:40 PM
I like your skin.  I changed the font size for my middle aged eyes, otherwise kept it the same, but I would like to be able to see past due tasks on the agenda.  Can you tell me what code to change?  Also, the times for sunrise and sunset are slightly off.  It reads 5:31 and 18:21, while naval observatory says 7:24 and 4:29 (16:29).  I changed the code to civil time and checked my lat and long to three digits and put in the negative sign.  Any ideas?  Anyway, appreciate the work you put in on this.
Title: Reply...
Post by: dp1don on January 02, 2004, 01:43:20 AM
Scott:

1) Out of curiosity, what font size did you choose?

2) My theory on sunrise/sunset is that it calculates when the sun would pass below a theoretical horizon at sea level. However, the NO, having access to GPS mappin g data for each location, throws in a "smidge" factor based on elevation at that location. Hence the differences...

2b) Sunrise and sunset times for any locale show up based on the local time setting on the PDA. The fact your times are 2 hours off leads me to wonder if you have the "visiting city" time selected on your PDA?

3) As for tasks - I've never gotten it to work - it's on my to do list. Since I still use a written task list (I know, I should get off the paper trail...), it's not been as high a priority for me. But I'll bump it up now, since I'm curious as well.

1) Mostly 15, had to leave some small to fit around icons as I didn't initially want to play with moving things on the screen, I may play with that later.
2b)I don't think I have the visiting city selected.  How can I be sure?  The sunrise and sunset times are way off for my other cities (either figured by my local time or theirs).  I have 4 cities selected.  The three that are not mine list the same times, which are impossible (1:00, 13:07) while mine is closer to reality (5:53, 18:00).  My 2nd city is 3 hours west of me, 4th is my time zone and 3rd is halfway around the world.
3)Getting my tasks off the little slips of paper was one goal of getting my axim.  Until recently I listed them as multi day appointments, and deleting them when done. Since TodayPlus I've been actually listing them as tasks.  :D
Thanks for the quick answer.

Title: Problem With Daily Weather
Post by: dgmele on January 03, 2004, 02:55:08 AM
Once the "Now" section expires, tapping on any of the remaining days brings up the "Now" section details instead of the specific day details. Is this just happening to me?
Title: No...but I'll look into it this weekend...

I hadn't observed that behavior... but I'll look into it. I know where in the code it might occur...

Post by: dp1don on January 03, 2004, 12:59:02 PM
Good catch, my firend. Since I update my weather info regularly, I never tested that feature that thoroughly...and indeed, it was set to always show "current data".

All better now.

I've updated the skin, reincorporated it into the ZIP file and reposted it above. Go ahead and download the AximSlide.ZIP and have at it.

dp1don

PS to Scott51 - The reason my tasks weren't populating was because I well...didn't have any tasks entered. Amazing how well they work when you populate them.
Title: Font Typo
Post by: dgmele on January 03, 2004, 06:33:02 PM
Thank you for the time and effort you put into this skin and for the correction of the "Now" problem. You might want to know that because Frutiger Linotype is consistently spelled as "Frutinger" the system apparently reverts to Tahoma as the default, no problem for me as I prefer Tahoma for numbers.
Title: How do you get the CF not to appear
Post by: umlaw on January 05, 2004, 12:06:33 AM
On my screen it always jumps between CF and SD even though I don't have an CF card.  How can I make it only display the SD info?
Title: New and improved...now with improved whiteners...
Post by: dp1don on January 05, 2004, 02:32:12 AM
Unlaw:

No CF?  I'm guessing you've got an Axim X3 model... It requires a bit of surgery to the skin to stop that.  Luckily, you caught me in a good mood....

Here are now TWO versions of Aximslide...for X3 and X5 models.

Since I don't have an X3, unlaw, I'm designating you as my official tester...let me know how it works for you.

One thing on the SD card...it has to be the first item chosen in the Storage Path section of the Config.exe.

Enjoy.

DP1Don

P.S. I've updated that ol' Fruitiger vs Futinger font name issue...what can I say? It was late, I'd had too many Coronas...or maybe not enough Coronas...
:P

Where do you have the SD card information for the X3? Just an observation!
Title: Where the SD card info is...
Post by: dp1don on January 08, 2004, 10:56:04 PM
Joel:

The SD Card info should appear (as I've tested it) on the right side of the system information container. It shouldn't flash between two cards like the X5 version does (since it doesn't need to - no CF in an x3).

 Talking technical turkey:

 The System Info Container is Region 8
 The sub container is Region 9...
 The SD area starts at location 160, 2, within this container.
 The button for the SD info starts page 300, which gives a little more detail on capacity used/available.

 Lastly, in the Config.exe, you have to make the SD card your FIRST storage path for this to work correctly - but that's included in the CAVEATS I posted with the skin.

Hope that info helps.

I had a slight problem with the SD card showing, the code was corrupted during download. That wasn't the only thing not working. I am using the same system info and had no problem after clean download.  That was the first time that ever happened. I have tried all the skins, and just love to look at the code.  I am more of a screen decorator, then a code breaker.

P.S. My system info flashes between main memory and the SD card for my X3i.
Title: Help with Sunrise and Sunset
Post by: bubba on January 09, 2004, 01:05:04 AM
Hi ---

Thanks for making this skin. Can you tell me why my sunrise and sunset are not displaying the correct times. I hve the proper long/lat set as well as the city in the weather. It states that sunrise is at 4.37pm and sunset at 2:41 am. Clearly these are wrong. I checked the clock and it is set for home (not visiting).

BTW, can I use different weather icons, i.e. BBC, Accuweather, etc?

Any help is certainly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Did you remember that North is + and that W is - you don't put a plus but if it is a - you need to put that in.

You can use different weather icons, by downloading them to the weather icons folder. But you must have the icons in there own folder within the weather icon folder. PLUS you must edit the line in the top of the skin that tells TodayPlus which icons to use.

Hi ---

Thanks for the reply. Both the values are positive (+) 33 lat. & 112 long. Therefore, if I understand you correctly, I can just enter them as is, which is what I am doing and still getting the wrong values.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Cheers.

As I thought it is -112 try that.
Title: AximSlide for v0.11.0
Post by: bubba on January 09, 2004, 10:40:06 AM
I will try that later today. I checked 2 sites (http://www.stateguide.com/az/Scottsdale/), (2nd site) (http://www.realestate3d.com/gps/latlong.htm) and they both have it listed at 112 (not -112).

But if it is implied that it is "-" then that would make sense.

Thanks for your help.

Title: Bubba: Long/Lat answers...
Post by: dp1don on January 11, 2004, 10:52:46 AM
Joelw - thanks for replying to Bubba...

Bubba, mught I recommend the follwoing site for your Long-Lat numbers:

http://www.heavens-above.com/

This is the Heavens Above site. Follow the link to Select your location, and drill down through the country list to the United States.

Then type in "Phoenix" as your search parameter. (No quotes needed).

It comes back with a list of about a dozen towns and cities named Phoenix, including this one:

QuotePhoenix    Arizona   Maricopa   33.448  -112.073  343 m

That's City, state, county, Latitude, Longitude and Elevation above sea level.

As you can see, Lat's a positive number, and Longitude is a negative...

The best way to envision it is like the old cartesian coordinates we had to use when graphing algebra back in school (the old X-Y scales).

By convention, X ran left and right, and everything to the left of the Zero Point was considered negative.

Similarly, by convention, the Y scale ran up and down, and everything below Zero Point was considered negative.

For our world coordinates, it's the same thing, except the X Axis is measure from the Greenwich Meridian, which runs north-south therough Greenwich England...

And the Y axis is, of course, the Equator.

So, we're abive the equator, so we have a positive Y value (our Latitude)....

But we're to the left (west) of the Greenwich Meridian...so our X value is NEGATIVE. (That's our Longitude, btw).

Long winded, but I hope it makes sense.

Bonus questions:

1) Where is 0,0?

2) Can you have 1 measurement of 180,180? how about -180,-180? If so, why, and if not, why not?

Class dismissed, turn in your homework tomorrow....

Title: X3 Update - SD not showing up right
Post by: umlaw on January 12, 2004, 10:12:47 AM
I have finally had a chance to check out the skin.  Although it works well the SD card shows up for 2 seconds or so when you turn the unit on and then disappears.  Do you know why it would be doing this?
Title: Sunrise/Sunset Off By More Than 25 Minutes
Post by: JimHughes@Qwest.net on January 12, 2004, 02:15:52 PM
I'm also in Phoenix. My coordinates are set at 33.66 and -112.209 (from my GPS)

Today Plus lists the times for sunrise and sunset: 7:06am and 6:07pm.
The actual times according to yahoo weather are 7:34am and 5:41pm (which are correct, based on observation)

Even if my coordinates are slightly different than the weather service, that still seems like too much of a discrepancy.

Any ideas?
Title: Jim, check your skin....
Post by: dp1don on January 12, 2004, 06:10:05 PM
I believe you'll find your sunrise and sunset calculations are using the CIVIL setting (short for Civil Twilight).

This is the data for Phoenix for today from the Heavens Above Website:

Quote
Observer's Location:  Phoenix ( 33.4480°N, 112.0730°W)
Local Time:  Arizona Time (GMT - 7:00)

Event  Time
Astronomical twilight starts:   06:05
Nautical twilight starts: 06:35
Civil twilight starts: 07:05
Sunrise: 07:32
Sunset: 17:40
Civil twilight ends: 18:07
Nautical twilight ends: 18:38
Astronomical twilight ends: 19:08

As you can see your times are there, but are the CIVIL TWILIGHT settings. Modify your skin to use OFFICIAL settings, the actual sunrise/sunset.

For additional info on what the four sunsure/sunset times are, look at this thread:

http://www.dark-mojo.com/todayplus/viewtopic.php?t=1254

Respectfully,

:(  :(  :(  :(

Bad news.

Upgraded to MS Money 2004 Deluxe (and corresponding Money for Pocket PC).

Resynced device to load Money data...

PDA slowed to absolute crawl . used Pocket Controller to check it out, and found out both Built-in Storage and CF card no longer visible on device!!!!!

After all nighter searching web for possible solutions, have given in, gone through phone hell with Dell support.

Replacement Axim should be hear in 3 days.

Does your SD card reappear after 2 sec?
Title: No, it dissappears and stays gone
Post by: umlaw on January 15, 2004, 05:00:02 PM
I don't know why either.  I thought it was just switching between a cf card that wan't there but you turn the unit on and it is there, then 2 seconds later it disappears and doesn't come back until you turn the unit off and back on again.

Clicking on the spot where it would be makes the SD card info show up, but then when you return to the screen it isn't there.

I don't know anything about programming and looking at the .txt files makes me even more confused.  If anyone can solve this mystery I would appreciate it.

Title: Working on the Axim x3i fix....
Post by: dp1don on January 25, 2004, 11:37:45 AM
Hi guys.  After three attempts by Dell, I actually have a wroking PDA again, and am ready to start in on the issues.

As I see it, my to-do list:

1) In AximSlide X3, the SD card image disappears almost immediately after starting up from the system status section.

2) I have to clean up the code from the cut and pastes and comments out of attempts past.

This is my " Would be Nice" list

1) Update the Almanac screen in the weather section to include text description of moonphase.

2) Left-Right scrolling through weather forecasts

3) Display weather update times.

Progress will be coming on these, but please be patient...
