Title: srs, we miss you!
Post by: rbg08 on January 27, 2004, 03:03:37 PM
Lately I've been just checking up on the New Skins forum, so it wasn't until recently that I noticed all the negative posts being directed towards srs.  I'm saddened that so many have forgotten this was a gift.  I've dedicated just as much time to this program as anyone else (besides srs), but never because I was obligated to, but because I enjoyed to.

I for one, accept this proram as srs creation, and thus his (& his only) to direct its development.  I just don't understand people complaining about someone who shares his personal creation out of the goodness of his heart.  (Sounds like children complaing about what Mom serves for dinner ;) ).  Guys, he owes nothing to us.

I just want srs to know there are plenty of us that appreciate what you have shared with us & hope the recent negative comments of a few don't discourage you from the continued development of the best program for PPC!

Thank You!!! :)

Note:  Please refrain from posting negative comments in this thread.  If you wish to express appreciation to srs, feel free to post your comments.

I agree with you 150%, we were given a gift, and many don't appreciate what we have. If I was in the 1960's I would say there is too much  negative vibes in here. I am here because I think this program is great, and I enjoy playing with it. Please let us move on, to better days.

Agreed. I've written elsewhere (in too many posts   :) ) that this site used to be a positive place to visit, but of late has become much too negative.

I have spent (wasted?) time responding to a number of those complaining / demanding posts, and posters, but will do so no longer. From now on, I will limit my posts to those that actually help the people who want to continue using the program.

I certainly applaud srs for having written this outstanding plugin, and I hope that TP will be able to continue beyond 2/29.

All the best...................Scotty

This is THE best program for the PPC Today Screen. Period.

I am ready, willing and able to write a check, send a payment via Paypal or pay via credit card so that I can continue using it. Just point me to the purchase site! (I am aware that this is not a commercial product -- YET) ;)

Yes, I totally agree with what you wrote: SRS, we miss you!!! He'd  made a very good program for us, and it's nice to play with it. He's given us a pleasant hobby!

SRS: PLEASE, DON'T STOP THE GOOD THINGS YOU'VE DONE FOR US!!! I'm sure you'll get good feelings in giving us constantly new improvements. Also again: DON'T STOP!!!

I just want to concur with everyone. Browsing through all the freewares available, I realize what a great program T+ is, and we as a group should really appreciate what we are given.

In addition, I also want to offer my thnx and appreications to those who provide us with great skins. I am using LT 11.0, and I am particularly grateful to him, but the same ought to be said about all others.

I agree with everyone.  TodayPlus is the greatest Today plug-in I have ever found.  I now no longer run any single other plug-in.  SRS, don't let a few negative feelings ruin a great thing!

I would also like to agree with the above posts. You can never please everyone but for those of us that have been around for awhile (and even the newer folks who recently showed up) we are very happy with the way things are going. Don't let a few bad apples ruin evrything that has been accomplished. SRS, you have created a fantastic program and I for one would sorely miss it if you don't extend the beta.

SOS, SRS,

We need you man. There is to many poeple that love this programe for you to not come back. I understand you getting upset, but not this upset. There will always be poeple not happy with one thing or the other. and thats with anything not just programs. but there are to many poeple that love the work you have done. Like i said over and over again from way back in the beginning of today plus. I admire what you do and how well you do it. I know you love programming, becouse if you didn't you wouldn't have done what you did so far. I know i love programing/graphics/hacking ect. I been a carpenter for 24 years know and a programer/graphics artist and such for about 15 years, and it is my pasion. I love it. thats why i do what i do for todayplus. I didn't understand why you got mad at me though, I stated my opion, i was mad becouse you didn't tell us that the betas expired, espacily since a small group of us was there from almost the begining and put alot of work into it ( and the beta testers should have known). We should have been told, but thats over and done with, now we know. just becouse some poeple took it to far and won't let it drop. and then there are the poeple fighting back with them saying drop it let it go just keeps them going. just don't post anything in that thread anymore and leave it alone.

What i am really trying to say is srs come back and do what you do so dam well. i mean what the hell am i going to do with no todayplus lol. You got us hooked you got to give us more i am jonesing lol. For real come back bro.

Thank you, but i am gratfull to you and the rest of the poeple that use my skin, becouse i know i did something that somebody likes. And that makes me feel good, so thank you Tonya. And that i think the name Tonya is so dam hot. :D  And of course it goes with out saying that i am greatfull to SRS for with out him none of this could be posible.

You made an absolutely awesome program, I couldn't live without it!!!
The program is still in Beta, and keeps better and better everytime. I really hope that you are continuing developing Todayplus.

After having expressed my opinion about the whole expiration issue, I agree with everybody that it's time to put this behind us and simply enjoy this great program.

As it has already been said here, TodayPlus IS the best program for the PPC Today Screen. No other gives us the same features + flexibility + power to make it look EXACTLY like we want.

For this fact alone, everybody who uses TodayPlus should be extremelly thankful that someone created such a great program and made it free.
I know I am. :)
Title: Come back
Post by: yvesrn on January 28, 2004, 08:58:35 AM
Problems/bugs are a natural result of software development. SRS has done a great job with this application and I'v felt it should be one that is sold. It is easily worth anywhere between $10-$20.

I have also had problems using TodayPlus from caching pages that eats up all my storage space (I've since changed pages cached to 0) to it not saving my preferences, to I suspect causing a hard reset recently, but that is to be expected. I hope SRS continues to develop and improve this application.

In any event, freeware is use at your own risk and no one should be angry with the developer (if that IS in fact happening). Keep up the good work SRS, I look forward to using future releases. BTW, going back to my original question, when can I expect it.

Kudos!

In the past, the TodayPlus community has been know for providing excellant assistance by creative and knowledgable people, who were committed to seeing TodayPlus succeed, by freely donating their time.  Now I am afraid we may be known as a community that whined and complained and drove away a GREAT developer who was willing to share with us a GREAT piece of software.

Please, lets try and get back to providing helpful solutions and constructive feedback, along with a positive attidude, and hope that SRS will return.

I would encourage everyone who is a satisfied user of Today Plus to send SRS a private message offering him positive feedback on your experience with his application and ask him to return.  We'll start our own campaign.  Just click on the srs name in a post and there will be a logo 'pm' that you can use to type him an email.  He might not be visiting the forum, but I'm sure he will read emails.

And as an example, I included my email to him:

SRS,

I wanted to drop you a note to tell you how much I've enjoyed using TodayPLUS AND that you missed at the forum.  There is a thread that is getting longer each day from happy users wishing you would return and continue development of this great app.

There will always be people who complain, whine and are generally otherwise unhappy.  This is just part of the territory.  The work you've done is appreciated by a much larger group of people who have become dedicated users and look forward to seeing future releases from you.

I encourage you to give the forum another chance and build off your already successful work.  This is an app you should sell and make a profit off of.  I'm sure you could charge anywhere from $10-$20 for the application which would help you continue development and keep your happy user base as loyal as ever.

You've done great work and are missed!

Sincerely,
yvesrn

Hi SRS:

I am just repeating what others have covered in own way. I have used TP in more ways that I can express in this forum. TP have challenged some of us to do things that we would not have thought we are capable of doing. It is all possible because of the wonderful program that you have created. I am speaking for myself and probably most of that have used the program.

I am a very positive individual that believes in people. I know that you also believe in sharing, if not, you would not have created such a wonderful program to share with us.

We miss you and all your participation. Come back and soon.

Everything I need to know - Part I
I know that several decades ago, I dedicated myself to spend the rest of my life with my best friend - I got married.  I know that throughout the years, I have often disagreed with my lovely bride, sometimes with great PASSION!  I know that if I disagree so strongly with someone I have committed my life too, my chances of agreeing with everyone on this board to whom I have commited nothing (not even financially), are relatively slim.  And yet, we are stronger because as a community we raise this product to a higher level.

Everything I need to know - Part II
I know that because of this board, I have learned a great many things about some wonderful people.

I know that the two canine brothers (Blazingwolf and CoolWolf), besides being great desiginers, show tremendous patience and kindness with each newbie post that asks a question.  Even if the question is almost exactly the same as a previous post several days earlier.  Their gift of patience is truly amazing, and for that I am greatful.  By the way, Blazingwolf was the #3 response on the original Brighthand board when SRS first asked for help so if anyone wants to talk about time involved in this journey, he should get first shot.

I know that the scholars of this board - Morpheus, Jhollin1138, RBG08, Lightman, YA1950, fishboy, arbitrajeu, joelw135, yogiman, and many others have provided wisdom and direction and generated many wonderful discussions on what this product can be.

I know that many people from all over the world have come to this board for help, direction, laughter, and to share in a great product.  I currently see 8 translations on the board - wow!  I know that we come from many backgrounds, professions, experiences, etc., and many of us come with respect, kindness and patience looking for guidance and help.  We all have something to offer, even if it's our affirming a product and a job well done.

I know that the new people to this board, such as madtxn, have shown an incredible passion for this product in a very short time period.  It's interesting that today+ can inspire so much feeling.

I know that LordTwisted does not sleep.  No matter what time I check this board from which country, his is always the most recent post.  And except for his sometimes interesting spellin' (warnning - lol), he is the most wonderfully creative person designing for Today+.

I know that we are all here because of:  Eitel.  His hosting of this board is a great gift that we all take for granted, yet takes a tremendous amount of energy and time (and money).

I know that this is the only board I check regularly.  I watch the feature requests turn into sticky's to get an idea of what might be in the next release.  And even though I don't know how I could use all the wonderful ideas that people suggest  (I live in St. Paul, Minnesota where the high today was 5 below, and the Ice Palace was closed because of cold - I will never see anything but a Blue temperature), I am constantly amazed by the breadth and depth of suggestions.  And yes, SRS is always one step ahead of us.

I know that I don't post with any regularity - although, I do try to help people through PM with problems from time to time.  While some people want to see only one day of calendar's events at a time, I would like to fit one day on a page, just once.  So, I apologize SRS for not being more active, I never seem to have enough time.

Everything I need to know - Part III
I know that I get tremendous use out of this product. I've tried and paid for the others, but this is the product that lets me see it my way.  Different weather reports and different time zones, schedules, and news.  In a font that even I can see.  My days are busy, and this simplifies a great many things for me.

So, everything I need to know, is right there on Today+.  SRS, THANK YOU!

First of all sorry for my bad English, it is not my foreign language.

1. Ones upon a time I wrote a tool program for my colleagues (80) in the company.
2. After same time there came a second  version for bug repair and for changed demands.
3. When I made version 3 I was still bugged by people telling me it did not work well, that where still using version 1.
The are just to lazy to download the new version, and preferred to blame other colleagues for the damage done.
There was also a vandal who put his name in stead of mine in the program.
4. So in this version 3 I build in a expiration date, and worse it did look for the old programs and deleted them. That was worse then SRS.
5. Off course I did NOT tell anybody about this because the would have made a backup of the old program.

SO IF YOU LIKE, PISS ME OFF,
but leave SRS doing what he is known to do excellent, Write programs.
Just meabe, he is not strong in communications that's not what we need from him. I't is not my strong side I think I'll understand him.

SRS a cannot imagine that you do not peek here, or get told what is happening here. Don't let the good suffer from the bad. Remember the friends you have here and don't let go of them, for nobody!

hi srs,

just wanted to say cheers!  and that i agree with all here - don't give up because of a 'few bad apples' - it comes with the territory.

i lead almost 400 people and weekly i get letters, emails, notes, meetings with people who 'have something to say to me'.  mostly they are concerned about some issue or other and want to share that with me.  often there are criticisms.   :(

but i have learned to take it as it comes, and not to give up (don't get me wrong there have been weeks and months that i wanted to give up and go back to my old life and job!).  but i keep going because i do it from love (i don't get an official income) for the people and for what i do.

i know you love what you do - it shows in the awesome product - todayplus.  so my encouragement to you is to learn from the things people say (good and bad) and to continue on with what you are called to do and what you do so well - program, program, program, program tp+!

as one of the other posters said, it's just a bump in the road, an opportunity to learn and grow.

and again thanks for letting me use tp+, even though i've only used it since nov 2003, it's become like an old friend on my ppc!  and even if it does expire, i will see the last few months configiuring, posting, etc as time well spent! :P

thanks!

I am a newbie in the broadest sense. My wife bought me an ipaq 2215 for Christmas. I searched the internet to see what I could do with it. What I discovered is your limited mostly by your imagination. I was directed to this site and discovered the greatest PPC software! The weather, the Rss feeds, the skins...the imagination. I have read this forum in depth. I want to thank everyone here. I've enjoyed my short time with this software and this board. Well, this may be my only post. I can't type(hunt and peck) so I don't unless I have to. I felt compelled to reply because I wanted you all to know how much I enjoyed all of your hard work. Thanks again. By the way, if this program were for sale, I would purchase it and buy many of the skins as well. That, I think, says it all.
Title: Don't let whiners get you down
Post by: JT on February 05, 2004, 11:21:32 AM
SRS,

You have a great program and a great initiative and incredible creativity. Forget how great T+ looks and works - I get amazed at your approach and the concepts behind it especially in terms of programming and CompSci in general.

You approach and methodology have created an engine that can and should be applied to much much more than just PPC screen displaying.

Very well done. You have shown your abilities and skills as exceptional. I certainly appreciate them and your efforts.

Just don't let the whiners and nay sayers get you down. It can take the fun out of it if you let it.

I know that the whole concept of an expriy date in beta software is a GOOD THING - an important thing. If others don't understand that then that is thier problem.

I wish you success in all your endevours  and keep up the good work.

Cheers
JT

Post by: Lenny on February 10, 2004, 09:12:33 AM
... reading all this bull..., that you people want to "share" with the rest of the world. Go get a life, people! I have read all posts about how sorry you are and how gratefull and how you miss him. Gee, don' you have any friends or family or at least a dog. What is the point in falling to your knees and begging like hell for someone to continue something we all can live without. I mean, does anybody know this guy in persona, has anybody ever met him, had a drink with him and talked to him about life? How important can he be for your personal well being if you spend countless hours praying to somebody who is just a guy who happens to write a descent program. Has he saved anybodys live or done anything that you know of that makes this world a better place? And I don'mean just playing with your ppc-toy. For gods sake, he ain't the Dalai Lama, far from it.
The way he is writing about other people just becaus they complain about something just pisses me of. He has shown no compassion for people like me, who just stumbled over this program, tried to figure out how it works and then use it for their personal needs. That's what a program is there for, for crying out loud. Use it, if it doesn't fit your needs or doesn't work anymore, throw it away. No need to bend over backwards and cream your jeans over it. If he wants to play with your "feelings" (strikes me how you all can even have some for a couple of bits and bytes) than let him play. I just kicked T+ off of my pda and that's it. On to the next one - and believe me it will be one where there is true support anf where I am not in Limbo over its working after next month. My first and last advice to you - stop cracking up and behave like human beings. There are much more important things in this world and in life than a poor and offended little programmer.

Ciao
Lenny

@blazingwolf

Kind of funny that you don't have to say more to my remarks than that. I didn't have a problem with the software, just with you all being so overly sorry and begging somebody to come back from where ever he is hiding!
It is one of the great misterys in life that if you don't have a real problem, you put a lot of effort in it to find one. I just tried to point this out.

I think the main reason you (Lenny) are being ignored is that you have a problem with spelling, and your comments were disparaging.  Many people here are willing to give up T+, but they are concerned with the welfare of another human being.  I think that's admirable.  I for one would like to have T+ back, but I also hope that nothing bad has happened to SRS.  Hopefully, he's just out camping or something.
Title: srs, we miss you!
Post by: Lenny on February 10, 2004, 02:04:17 PM
@madtxn

First of all, I'm sorry for the spelling, English is not my native language, but I try!
Second, I don't give a flying f... about being ignored (by the way, that is exactly what "srs" is doing with you guys - the "community")
Third, all I wanted is to get the perspective straight again. How would you feel if many people over a extensive period of time are begging you to post a "sign of life"? You would probably watch and see where all this is going to lead.
Last but not least, if you read all the posts, you would realize that the main object is to continue with T+ and not what happend to "srs"! As far as I could read, and that has nothing to do with spelling, nobody knows the guy. And don't tell me that you are as much concerned about your neighbour who is really influencing your personal life! Just a guess...

Oh, and I intended to disparage you - to make my point and to clear your head up a little. (had to look the word up, but it meets my intentions)!!!

@Lenny

I think you are the one cracking up. Why not post something useful?

Why would you post something so stupid and obvious. This is the INTERNATIONAL NETWORK. You going to get 'crazy people' or extreme language where ever you go. It's madness as a result of our commodified lives. Haven't you learned this yet? I thought we all just realized this and nobody ever bothered to mention it, seems redunant to me to talk about it.

I exagerate my messages on these forums to help convy my feelings more accurately. While this might sound backwards, it's the way it seems to work for me. I imagine other pepole are doing the same too. Conscientiously: I couldn't say, but they must be because the ambiguity in a person when posting allows for tactless behavior without the usual social consequences. When all you are left with is 'why not?' then I can hardly get excited when I read a post where the language is extreme.

If you know anything about entropy then this shouldn't sound too bizzare. The chaotic personification of the internet is strangely comfortable in my opinion.

As these people say 'TodayPlus expired/crashed and ruined my life', I just read it more abstractly and try to imagine what happened in reality. 90% of them are normal, tax-paying, hard working, educated individuals who eat, sleep and breath like all other humans. They have 'other lives' and feelings which can be easily understood with a rational and objective mind.

As for srs, I DO care more about his well being than the continuation of TodayPlus. Who knows what happened, he my be dead and that's no joking matter. I care about life (all life) above everything else. I think other people here do too. I fail to see the validity to your point.

I hope I wrote this in terms you could handle.

PS Do you use a MAC?

I've had this on my desk for a day or two after reveiwing the boards, I hadn't deleted it so, I guess it was ment to be sent.
SRS,
I love and appreciate the work you've done.  I can take all the positive board messages and multiply them by 10 and go on and on, that being said, Sorry, I have to say this because of how I feel about loyalty. I only have one problem with this and that is there are a couple of guys on the boards that have put in enough time and resources in to EARN enough respect from you, that you should've at least give them a clue as to what your doing, instead of leaving them hanging.  I didn't say get their permission for anything I just ment throw them a bone, a clue...ie...

"I'm tired and going to bed for 6 months...I'm going on a cruise to Alaska, be back when I'm thawed...oh, by the way the programs going to expire....Here (someone) is ver.12 it expires in(?) If i'm not back by then please do the following(..??).... People on this board have pissed me off
and i'll be back when I get back..."

Anything would've been nice to get a sence of direction for today plus and not have to resort to polls and inner struggles with loyalty.

As for today plus and the boards.... "FORGET ABOUT THEM and ME!" ... We are greedy, selfish people that only want to make another part of or day easier or give us something to do, like skin, especially ME.  I use it to organize my day, but mostly just like to modify Ltwisted skins and do enjoy learning from you, Lt, Blazingwolf, arbitrajeu,fishboy.. and others off the boards..
I'm sure you didn't ask for, or expect so much crap from people because of your program expiring and shouldn't be held responsible for how it will affect their day, because, it is a BETA program.

It's your life and your world.  If you don't want to commit another keystroke than don't, do whatever makes you happy.  We only have so many days on this planet and we need to make the most of them.  I won't ask you to come back but only to do what you want to do. I wish you the best in days to come, to be happy, and please, if you choose, understand why myself(maybe selfish, that have used  multiple other programs(crap) as today plug-ins), would want to see you come back and if you don't, to see this program used as a stepping stone for future today plug-ins.

Thanks for your time and efforts.

I feel a group hug coming on...

Hey, did y'all know that there's a workaround for the expiry?  Pining about probably won't do as much good as some folks have done in creating this workaround.  And although I really like TP, I wouldn't put so much dependance on a program written and maintained by one person.  That's one of the disadvantages of not having a team behind a product.

I've been thinking about all this srs stuff and the fact that he has created a very powerful tool which he has just 'abandoned'.

I have a hunch (no facts, just supposition), that he meant to sell it when it got to a slightly more developed stage.

All the arguments over the expiry of the betas may have been given as a reason for srs going away, but look at it this way:

srs wants to recoup money for all his time investment (as most would)

he starts releasing betas to get beta testers to assist his development

the expiry means that he will be able to sell a final version as all usable betas expire

people testing get annoyed about the expiry dates (it isn't clear that he plans to sell it so people only see that their time skinning can be wasted)

someone overcomes the expiry so srs sees he will not be able to sell it

srs walks away in disgust leaving everyone with a working beta

I could be wrong, but how about it?

@grayme:

Yep, I believe you are wrong.

I was involved in TodayPlus way back when it was just a thread on Brighthand.  SRS always stated several things.
I don't believe SRS abandonment of TodayPlus was due to fact that he wanted to sell it.  I feel what happened is, of course including his "family issues" thing, even thou he wasn't selling TodayPlus he was still forced to support it.  That was really the one thing he never really wanted to do, was to have to spend too much time on, especially when his break was over.  When the fallout of the expiration date came out, he took that as a good time to leave TodayPlus behind

It has been nearly two years now since the expiration date fallout.  During that time, the only word we have ever received from SRS was a handful of post over at Brighthand.

At this point I am sure SRS has graduated from college and is off on his career choice.  Like before, I am sure he still doesn't have time to support TodayPlus.

Well it had to happen sometime ;)

I just find it extremely strange that something SO powerful has been left to drift unattended by its author.

Why hasn't MicroSoft bought it up, put it into its operating system (it is far more powerful than their today screen?

Why hasn't anyone else taken the idea, written their own and made a mint?

It's all too weird!

I think it became a burden more then a programming pleasure to SRS. because even he didn't want to sell it not being oblicated giving support people where asking to much from him. I think they still do!

I have followed the TodayPlus drama from the beginning too at brighthand.

I hope his college wend well. That's more importent then meet up to others standards for a free app.
