Title: Config.exe vs. Config.txt in v.0.11.0
Post by: dp1don on December 23, 2003, 06:55:59 PM
Greetings, semi-newbie here.

I've been working on a modified version of the Slider skin in v 0.10.1, which modified the status icons to display the SDCard and CFCard settings for my Dell Axim X5. I'd modified the skin file and the confg file to feature these.

In v 0.11.0, I was dismayed to see the config.txt replaced with config.exe, but was willing to give it a try.

Three items:

- Config.exe, while writing to the registry, does not update config.txt.

- V 0.11.0 does in fact install a CONFIG.TXT file in the default directory, which TP then uses to update the skin. In fact, it ignores the registry completely if this file exists...and then if this file is removed, refuses to acknowledge the registry setting.

- Hacking the registry and reinstalling TP does not change this.

At this point, I've spent a few too many hours convinced that I was doing it wrong. But I've isolated files, unloaded files...and I'll be darned if I can get the Config.exe to save stuff to the registry correctly, or to get TP to even acknowledge the registry entries.

At this point, I'm working on modifying the config.txt file to do what I want v11.0 to do...any other suggestions?

I haven't seen a config.txt file in the 0.11.0 version.  Where and when does it appear?

After you install the application, use file explorer and browse to Program Files TodayPlus. In the TodayPlus folder you will see the config file, tap it and it will open.  Then first select your skin, it can be one you draged over into the skins directory, or the generic slider skin included.  Then fill out the config file.  There is plenty of help here so if you can't find it in other posts just ask.

I'm familiar with config.exe.  I was referring to the post by dp1don where he said that v.0.11.0 installs a config.txt file, etc.  I haven't seen any sign of a config.txt file with v0.11.0, so I don't know what he's talking about.

Ok, there isn't a config text that I know of it writes to the registry many of the items that were in the config text.

OK, that'll teach me to put my foot where my mouth is.

I have performed a complete TP-ectomy on my Axim - all files, directories, registry entries - gone. Ensured TP wasn't selected as part of the

I then downloaded, fresh, the TP v0.11.0 cab file, extracted it, and copied it onto the Axim - placed it into the root directory.

Activated the CAB file, allowed the install to complete.

Immediately opened TP Config.exe, from the Start->Programs menu.

Selected the slider.txt skin, set the default path to /Program Files/Today Plus

Inserted one city, one RSS feed (CS Monitor), one clock, one shortcut group with 2 shiortcuts.

Did a soft reset on the Axim.

Upon restart, checked the Today settings, and found TP already checked.

Closed today settings screen, and was greeted by...blank.

OK, so I wrote this missive, thinking it wasn't working...d three lines ago, it popped up.

OK, the time delay was a little interesting...but overall, let's see what this puppy can do.

As for the exiting config.txt file.... my best guess was that I had it previously there and wasn't as thorough with the cleaning as before.
Thanks for your assistance, and insistence...

Now that you have gotten started the fun begins, there is unlimited potential to this application.  I have become obsessed with it, any time there is new code I put it in.  Pretty soon I will have to have two PPC's in order to do all the stuff. Just kidding!!

What do you think about cofig.txt/config.exe? I think, that it is better to use config.txt. For example - it would not be easy to upgrade TP to new versions, to experiment with its configuration using registry. With config.txt I can save to desktop this file, edit  and then restore it, it is very easy to copy/paste lagre segments of setings - and what about doing such with registry?

So if I want to be able to change skins and such, do I need the config.txt file?  If so, do I just create it from scratch or how do I get it?

Everything I'm seeing says to edit the config.txt file. I have 0.11.0 and do not have the config.txt.

The config.txt was eliminated in version 0.11.0.  Now everything is stored on the registry.  You can add/remove/change your settings by using the config.exe program.

Ver 11 does not have a config.txt file, what it has is a config file that is setup by using file explorer and browsing to the TodayPlus folder, then locating the config file and taping the file. The config setup file will now open. Once opened you will be able to see what has to be done.  There is a General tab for selecting the skin you would like to use. then there is an Owner info tab for owner info, and other tabs for setting up countries and rss, and weather etc.  If you want to use a skin other than the default slider skin you must drag it to the skins folder within the TodayPlus folder.

Thanks Eitel!

That seemed to be the feeling I was getting.

I guess at this point any changes that you want to make should be done in a totally separate skin file.

I think I was confusing myself in that I just found the program and downloaded. Without the config.txt that everyone was talking about, I was having a hard time finding a starting point.

Time to start playing  :D
