Title: configuring today plus...?
Post by: jk74 on January 27, 2004, 12:54:26 PM
I just downloaded and installed Today Plus v11 to my Toshiba e755. For some reason, when selected it doens't show up on my Today screen, and when I try to run the configuration program it just shows me an hourglass for about 5 seconds and then goes away (like the program tried to run, but terminated).

I loaded the .NET stuff like requested as well...

Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks.

Josh

Have you tried a soft-reset yet?
Title: configuring today plus...?
Post by: jk74 on January 27, 2004, 04:34:32 PM
absolutely I have done several soft resets, and even reloaded the program. Nothing helps.

It's strange as I had this working before, but I had to relaod my PPC and now its just not working for me.

Did you try to run install over the top of the old installation?
I hate to say this, but you should use a registry editor and remove the TodayPlus entry, and of course uninstall the program. Then start a new install. That I think is the only way to go.

ok  -  i just tried that and it didnt solve the problem. All I deleted however was the HKLM/Software key found at Apps/SSR Today Plus.
Any other suggestions?

Do you have any other plug-ins running? If you do turn them off.
Title: configuring today plus...?
Post by: jk74 on January 27, 2004, 08:31:18 PM
nah, nothing else running. the today screen just comes up blank when I have TodayPlus selected under 'Items' by itself.

I do have a few other plug ins loaded, but they're not selected.

Should I mention that i'm running WM2003?

Try using the registry editor to go to srssoft/todayplus. When you tap on the todayplus you should see a line called "skin". Make sure that it says skins\"the name of the skin you want to use.txt" . If it doesn't change it so it says the skin you want. For example mine says:

Skins\CalendarPlus111.txt

Hope this helps.

First of all, thanks for the info.
What I see in my registry however under HKLM/Software/Apps is

SRSSoft TodayPlus

not srsssoft/todayplus

In other words, there is no TodayPlus subfolder.
Can you please confirm and be more specific? When you put a "/" character in the string of text used to define a registry entry, you are usually suggesting that the text after the / is the name of the folder one level down in the hierarchy. Is that what you are suggesting?

Also, in my "SRSSoft Todayplus" folder, there is no skins key.

What kind of key should it be? A string value?

Why is this so difficult?

oh, and other thing i'm noticing, is that my device will sometimes soft-reset when I select the TodayPlus item for the today screen and click 'OK'

very odd

this software doesnt seem all that stable to me

It looks like this -SRSSoft
------------------------TodayPlus

In the sub directory TodayPlus there is a key that looks like this, don't mind the dashes, I need them for spacing.

skin--------------------------Skins\CalendarPlus

Look for that entry, and where I have CalendarPlus, you put the name of the skin you have on your PPC and you want to use there after the Skins\

Here is a screen capture of what I am talking about. Does your registry look like this? Just so you know I am using rescoe's registry editor.

Hi folks

Iwas just about to post the same as BW (so I'll post it anyway  :D )

This is using PHM regedit... my skin name is "JLW calendar skin" ( it is a modification of BW's excellent skin) and you can see the first few characters.....

And (like you, JK74) I am running WM2003, so that shouldn't be the issue.

ok, I think I know the issue here. I was talking about the HKLM hive.
It seems you guys are using HKCU (current user)

I have the TodayPlus folder, but no skin subfolder
I only have:

battery and uptime subfolders within

If blazingwolf comes back he mite have other ideas, but I would try to delete all the keys in SRSSoft and try to reinstall Blazingwolf mite be back in a little while.

Give joelw135's idea a shot and let us know what happens. If you can't get it working we might have to create the registry section from scratch.

well, it seems that perhaps the real problem is that my config program wont run, and that is what I'm assuming would properly build all these registry keys for me.

Perhaps I can just enter them in by hand.
Anyone care to export their entire TodayPlus key (with all subkeys) for me?? and post here?
Title: configuring today plus...?
Post by: Blazingwolf on January 27, 2004, 11:00:41 PM
Yes I am more then willing to do that. However, try deleting the srssoft key and reinstalling first. If for no other reason then to humor me. I would really like to know if that works or not. Thanks.

Here you go.

It's not really a zip file - just change the extension from .zip to .reg

Gotta go for tonight.

Good luck.........Scotty

ok, well playing with that registry file just screwed my whole device, so I reset from scratch.
The darn config program still doesn't work, believe it or not. It just wont run.
When I check the registry, the only subfolder under TodayPlus is 'uptime'

Ouch, sorry to hear that.

I can't imagine what's wrong - I have NO reference to SRSSoft or TP under my HKLM - only under HKCU.....

If you PPC has just been reset, just import the registry and try from there.  If not try to download a new TodayPlus, maybe you have a corrupt download.

Ive tried all of this. Is there an older version I should try? Will it have been expired by now?
Title: configuring today plus...?
Post by: jk74 on January 28, 2004, 09:58:35 AM
the problem with importing the registry is that it doesn't merge. It seems to overwrite the whole thing, so when your device soft-resets, it totally goes bonkers.
I would recommend against doing that, unless you specifically have a merge function on your registry program.

I'm using PHM RegEdit, btw.

furthermore, can someone reply with the correct order of procedures to configure this software?
Once you install it, it seems that it is automatically selected as an ITEM within the Today screen selection of Items. Do you first run the program, or do you first run config, or what?
Do you need to reset at all?
I find this so frustrating, as it seems that there is some type of problem getting this to run on Toshiba e755 hardware.

Is there anyone else out there with a Toshiba e755 running Windows Mobile 2003 who is using this software?

also, as another point of note, I first had the .NET stuff installed, but since that didn't help me, and since I read somewhere else that 2003 comes with the .NET stuff installed already, I want to mention that I've deleted it and still, the config program doesn't work.

However, with the software loaded it seems that the program tried to run (I get an hourglass for a few seconds), but when the .NET stuff isn't loaded, config does nothing at all.
Title: configuring today plus...?
Post by: jk74 on January 28, 2004, 10:08:33 AM
also, if I try to run TodayPlus out of the program files folder by itself (as an executable), it blanks out my screen (with the exception of the input selection method in the lower right-hand corner. However, it seems like it's running as ICBar shows it to be in memory (running), and its program close button also works, but that's about it.

Since you are running WM2003 you should not have to install the update to the .net compact framework. For the instillation you should be able to copy the cab file to your PPC then tap on it to install. I then usually go into the config file so that I can set up which skin I want to use and make sure that the base path is set to the correct area.

For whatever reason the registry is not being setup correctly on your unit. Have you tried to add each line to the registry by hand instead of doing an import? This is the hard way but since you have tried everything else I don't see any other options.

There have been other people with similar problems as yours but a hard reset seems to have taken care of the problem. Do search  for one of those threads and see if they mention something that might help you.

Thanks Blazingwolf.
Do you think that you could provide me with the details for the registry so that I can set it up manually?
I've started, but since I dont have any of the keys, I have to create them all manually. I managed to get the skin up and running. It seems that it took a few minutes for the today page to be updated, but its there now...with little or no information however.

I need the detail for what goes under the TodayPlus folder in the registry and what goes into each sub-folder. I know this is a pain in the butt...
How can I change the city for the weather as well?
I've downloaded the LTwisted0.11.0 skin, which may be a bit bold on my part...but at the very least I need the basic config for battery, icons, city, coords, calendarfilter, etc???
I'm just referencing the screen shot you posted yesterday, btw.

Hi jk74

Yesterday, I posted the exported registry file for todayplus. You installed it, but said it messed up your machine.  However, if you just rename the file to a txt extension (for example, change the name to SRSSoft.txt), then you can open it in Notepad - and you'll see all the contents of the registry in ASCII.

I just did it (DL'd the file from the previous page in this thread, renamed it to txt, & opened it). I attach a screen cap of the top part of the file.....

Good luck

Scotty

You shold be able to use the file that scotty gave you but here is a list of the folders that are in TodayPlus(this is in the registry of course).
battery
calendarfilter
city
coords
icons
image
options
RSS
shortcut
storage
taskfilter
text
time
uptime
var

Notice that RSS is capitalized. Make sure you do that or it might not be found.

Thanks Scotty. Yup, I'm doing just what you said. However, based on your skin I think you have different settings than me.

Yes some of the settings will be different. We can work on that as you get things working. I have to leave for awhile but I will check back to see how you are doing.

I really would like information on how to set my local city for the weather to update.

Post by: Scotty on January 28, 2004, 11:24:45 AM
Hi JK74

Yes, quite a few of the settings will be skin-specific, and even user-specific. If you want to try my skin (which is based on Blazingwolf's skin), I posted it elsewhere - BUT that post was made for another reason, and so I didn't include the buttons that I have modified. Let me know if you want me to send you a ZIP of my skin with all the images that I use (most of which are in the regular TP download, of course, but not all of them)

I attach a cap of my screen

Title: configuring today plus...?

that is a really beautiful skin and setup.
I'm slowly realizing that manually customizing this will be next to impossible. I don't even have a listing of the options to choose from, nor do I even know what they do, so I'm at a bit of a loss here.

My hope if to battle the config.exe problem at the same time. There are several others in other post threads who are battleing with this exact problem. Some have even had the same experience as me, where it worked initially but now does not.
A hard reset supposedly clears their problem, however it didn't fix mine.

I think this is a WM2003 issue, and needs to be investigated by the persons who wrote this software.

I really would like information on how to set my local city for the weather to update.

First, make sure your PDA is online (cradled, bluetooth, wifi, whatever). You'll see why this is necessary...

Then, go to the directory Program Files/TodayPlus (using file explorer). Find the file config.exe, and click on it. It should open to show a page with a series of tabs on the bottom (see graphic below). Click on the "Weather/RSS" tab, and a new page opens (see 2nd graphic). Click on "Add New", and another page opens. In the top box, type the city name (or ZIP, if you're in the States), then click the Search button - that's why you need to be online. The program should find your city. The third graphic shows what happens when I did this for Hoboken. As you'll see, the program search the net, and found 2 Hobokens. You select the one you want, and it's name appears in the lower-left box (I haven't included a graphic of that). You can modify the name in that lower left box (to how you want it to appear in TP - for example, you might not want to include the "NJ").

Good luck. Like Blazingwolf, I too have to log off now, for the rest of the day.

All the best.......................Scotty

Follow-up

Hi again JK 74

Your last post went on while I was preparing those 3 graphics.....sorry, I thought that you had found how to run config.exe, but if not, then obviously you can't do what I suggested.

I don't think it's WM2003 as such, because lots of people (including me) have no problems at all with TP under WM2003.

I'm off now. Sorry I couldn't help you more.

Okay...I have a similar problem....let me describe in detail...

I was using Today Plus fine, until I tried to install a today plug-in call uptime. After I install this plugin, I realise my Today Plus screen will not show up. So, I uninstall the uptime plugin.

Then, my today plus screen still will not show. I go the Today Plus Config, and realsied that under the Select Skin, I am not able to select the skin file slider.txt. It shows nothing in the drop down list. I went back to my file explorer, and the slider.txt file was just sitting there, in the skins folder.

Anyone can help?

Please go to the base path as seen on screen above and set base path to Program Files---TodayPlus, then exit config. Then go back into config and see if the skin can be selected now.

After I have installed the TodayPlus V11, I can't select the skin that I have already selected the correct path on "base path", but the "Select Skin (DLL)" is empty....

Did you install the microsoft frame work? If you did try a soft reset. Correct Base Path should be Program Files---TodayPlus.

Anything with WM2003 you do NOT need to install microsoft frame work.
