Title: Is Today plus dying ?
Post by: Yogiman on February 01, 2004, 10:00:41 AM
Everyday i come over here to see it there has been an update. Wishins srs will return, but it doesn't happen. Everyday i see there are less and less reaktions on the forum.

It is the first of februari and still no update. In about 4 weeks td+ will stop functioning. I already re-installed my old plug-ins, and looking for some new ones to replace the things td+ did for me.

Is this it ? Is TD+ dying ? I'm afraid so....

I hope not :(

Is TodayPlus dying? That seems to be the big question in this forum.  I wish someone had an answer, but it is up to one person srs to give  us that answer. Until that time comes we have to sit, wait and hope he decides to join us in our quest for a better TodayPlus.

I don't believe he just decided to quit. He would let us know i think if he stopped the project..

Isn't there anybody ho has personal contact with him ?

I have his personal email, but it won't do anygood since he is not ansering anybody. And since this started srs has been here a few times wich he did not give any anseaers so I really don't know whats up.

And to stop a project  like this for a few comments is pretty dum, so maybee something did happen to him,( i hope not).

I have good news and bad news, good news is that The version I have of ver 12 does not expire, I went through every month this year and next, and it still works Yaaa. Bad news is it is not place to give it out, It wouldn't be right, not by law or anything( I have checked) but by just consideration. It would be up to srs to do that. Other good news is that I have LTwisted0.12.0 waiting to be realesesd and my new skin that Has killer eye candy and some great new programing that i did waiting to be realesed, bad news is need Todayplus vers 12.

Lt,

it looks like you will be one of the few who can keep using td+. I'm really starting to think something happened to srs, i can't imagin someone getting so upset and not anwsering any of the e-mail, pm's, etc.

Maybe you can share it with us if he doesn't answer after the end of feb.

LT isn't the only one.

I was thinking about doing the same thing that LT did and determine what the expiration date for v0.12.0 is.  I am glad it sounds like there isn't one.

Edit:

Quote from: YogimanMaybe you can share it with us if he doesn't answer after the end of feb.
All of us "beta-beta" tester agreed not to distribute any "beta-beta" versions prior to srs releasing it,  I know I for one will not break that agreement.

I too am concerned about SRS, and hope that he is in good health.  I find it hard to believe, like LT, that he would quit support/development without a final word.  I also noticed that he had visited the forums (or fora) for a few days after his last message, then nothing.

I have version 0.12.0 documentation as well as my first full skin ready (almost) to deploy, and am also in limbo awaiting his return.  As for the documentation, I have a version 0.11.0, but having anticipated a quick release of 0.12.0, I did not spend much time on it and therefore am uncertian as to the accuracy of its contents.

I too, have thought about what the fate of 0.12.0 and am not sure of what should be done.  Should it disappear to be forgotten like its owner, or be released sometime in the future so that TodayPlus can live on and be enjoyed by the community?  I, like LT, am reluctant to release it without SRS's OK.  (Maybe a future vote by the TodayPlus Moderators may decide its fate.)

I also wonder if srs is OK ... let's hope so!

Total non-programmer here, so forgive me if this is a stupid question: I see people with a lot of talent on this board ... what would it take to create a program that does something similar to what TD+ did? I'm not talking about copying TD+, but creating a new program which does something similar. Thoughts?

My 2c are if SRS doesn't return in a month that you all distribute v12 to the community.

While I respect you not wanting to release v12 because SRS is the developer, neither did he provide instructions NOT to release v12.  It should be released at some point.  We can't assume we know what he wants because he is no longer communicating with the forum.

BTW, I also hope nothing bad has happened.

Actually we are instructed not to release pre-release versions.  The below quote is taken directly from a sticky at the top of the Beta Testers forum page (btw, only a certain group of us can access this forum).

Quote3. Do not distribute pre-release versions of TodayPlus outside this forum - srs will release it to the wider public when he's comfortable it is functioning to his satisfaciton.

As many members have posted  "WE hope srs is OK" I feel real bad that a program as useful as TodayPlus will be like a fine work of art locked in someones private gallery, where the rest of the world can't enjoy it. I hope srs is checking in and seeing that we indeed need him to complete his work of art, so the world mite enjoy. As the old saying goes "From MY Lips to Gods ears".

I don't want and hope I don't start a debate at this time, but I did want to point at that item #3 in the Beta Testers Forum was written by arbitrajeu, and not srs, as a guideline.  There is no indication of an "official" endorsement by srs (although it makes sense to believe this implied).  This was most likely put in place to avoid a premature release of a beta version before it was ready, to avoid additional support headaches.  This may not apply if no future version are planned.

I suggest that v0.12 is only available for the members of the Beta-testing forum. I really hope that nothing have happened to srs. I am convinced that he would start a thread or something about his opinion and what he wants to do with the program before the program quits running.
Again, please do not release the things that are discussed on the Beta-Testing forum. Maybe Eitel has something to say about this, he is the creator of this forum so I'll wait what he has got to say about this.

Not to sound obnoxious, but many of us have spent countless hours in this forum helping other members, even more hours than some members of the official beta test team. So how can you come and make such senseless remark. You shouldn't be addressing such a thing without srs!

IMHO, nothing should be released (no, not even to the official beta testers, Nielsracing   ) without srs' explicit consent. Anything else would run contrary to the oft-stated opinions of many on this board - that TodayPlus is srs', to do with as he sees fit.

I do, of course, join with everyone in hoping that nothing bad has happened to srs, preventing his returning here.

Scotty.

Whoops I think that you misunderstand me. Maybe it's my fault but it is hard to express my feelings in English...
What I ment, is that if you are a Beta Tester, you have access to V0.12. I ment that that is not a version that must be released to the rest of the members, untill srs wants to. So don't get me wrong, srs is the only one who can decide what will happen to Todayplus.
Title: Is Today plus dying ?
Post by: Scotty on February 02, 2004, 07:10:28 PM
Sorry about the misunderstanding. To further complicate matters, according to some posts in this thread, there are at least 2 versions of 0.12 -- one of them expires, the other doesn't...............
All the best......Scotty

The whole thing boils down to one thing! srs has sole right to this program and what happens to it.   Just because you are a Beta tester doesn't give you ownership, if we look at  the facts, then LT is the only one with a version that doesn't expire, given to him by srs, then he is the only one that should have it. But no person should have priority over another, in choosing who gets what. let's wait and see what srs says, and wants to do.

Sorry for the way I seem to be yelling, but I don't like hearing things like this at this time in the game, it only causes more decent in the ranks. As far as I am concerned srs is on vacation!!

This is not a new eventuality, but it bears mentioning.  Come February 29th, (or thereabout) v.0.11 will expire leaving everyone except for LT with a working copy of TodayPlus.  Unless SRS comes back this means the death of this forum and TodayPlus as everyone will no longer be able to use the application.

Should we start the death march?

Quote from: yvesrnShould we start the death march?
Seems a bit premature.

I'm hoping that srs is just leaving us long enough to "learn our lesson".  The whole reason he didn't ever agree to take our money was because he didn't want to feel duty-bound to maintain the application.  That said, I'm sure he never intended to leave us with a non-working version when he'd had enough.  My only fear is that the unreasonable way people responded to the expiry dates made srs think his worst nightmare had been realised, and he was obligated to support it.  I'm keeping quiet and also hoping srs is well and will choose to return.

You can still run TD+ after expiration, right? All you have to do is change your date back before you reset your device. Then TD+ will come up and then you can set your date to the correct date again.

Yes, that should work.  However, since I have an e740, soft resets are a daily requirement to keep everything up and running.   That is allot of date changes I would have to make.

Yes we are...
But in the beginning, some uf us could join a separate sub-forum, named Beta Testing so v0.12 is available for quite a while now.

A comment to your earlier post, I think that srs did a great job developing this program, so it's not easy to make the same program or something with the same functionality.

Because the "Beta" version of TodayPlus had become so popular, SRS created a Pre-Beta (Alpha?) group consisting of a much smaller group of individuals.

It would be possible to create a replacement that used the existing skin files and commands, but would most likely take as long as TP did to get where it is now, something like 6-8 months, depending on the programmers experience and available time.

Arg, what's going on here?! I moved appartments and have been without internet for a few days.... SRS is gone? I hope he is not hurt, but I think his absense might be for other reasons.

I've seen some vicious (even psycotic :D) posts on this forum and I'll bet any money he's sick of it. Maybe it's gotten to the point where it's effecting his home life... The point is, nobody should have said anything but encouraging and thankful things to the guy. I think he'll be back, I think he's just taking a break.

MY message to SRS: You created a wonderfully complicated program for those of us who knew how to read the code. For the rest you created chaos. But I think you should concider maintaining this user base, especially if you have any plans of making money off this venture. TodayPlus is a geeks dream come true and I'd hate to see some bigshot pocketpc company start something like this. This is your idea.

To the rest of you scumbags (ha, JK all!=scumBags): Instead of insinuating he should come back with this talk of what today apps you need, why not praise him for his hard work and beg him to come back. LT said he's not answering messages. Instead, we should send him a thank you and don't ask for anything, or send a virtual postcard of our today screens we made and don't pressure him. He's done so much and all for free.

Maybe Eitel, or who ever owns this site, can help arrange a way to accept donations for his work. Money is a sure way to any mans heart and he deserves what these people are willing to give.

Comments are welcome.

Perhaps this can be a Sourceforge project. I'm not a programmer, but there are tons of useful programs that are being made as an open source, collaborative effort? That is, indeed if srs is abandoning TodayPlus.

Maybe he'll surprise us and release v12 the day before v11 expires!  :D

I am an occasional visitor and I had been trying out Journal Bar just before I found TD+ in pocketpcfreewares. I must say it's a fantastic program that is also well supported, thanks to you all; but I'm sure you all know that.
My point is this (TD+) is someone's baby and it's HIS decision to maintain it or not. IF he chooses NOT to then thank him for providing it to us in the first place and move on. Of course I hope srs is ok and that he's going to renew. But if not then THANK YOU srs for letting me know there was an alternative to Journal Bar and letting me use it. And to all you skinners and mods out there, I know I haven't said this before so A BIG THANK YOU to you all. Especially whoever did the Calenderplus thing! :)
Now please don't get upset now anyone.  :)

And by the way, my calenderplus stopped updating yesterday, no weather, no rss feeds, just my shortcuts. But again THANKS anyway.

My guess is that SRS got really ticked when the whole "I can't believe these betas will expire" whining dominated the boards.  At that point, I believe this project stopped being fun for him.  Guys like SRS do this for fun and, apparently, not for money.  So, he is probably letting enough time go by so he can try to re-energize the fun factor.  I suspect he is working on other project and focusing on school work.  We can beg and plead for him to come back, but I suspect that won't speed things up.  He needs to come to the decision on his own as to whether working on TD+ is still fun.  I think we should all prepare ourselves for the possibility is that his answer will be no.

It's easy when we use free speech rationalizations to critisize and attack someone who's only incentive to give us all something is fun and an environment of sharing and support.

For what it's worth,
I sure SRS comes back. I just got everything set up like I wanted it only to find out it may die.  This program is great. At other sites, I see where people purchase products like journal bar, pi, etc.. Todayplus does all this and more. If SRS is giving up on the program, do you think he would release to us a version of 11 or 12 that doesn't expire? That would at least keep some us skinning, etc.. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

P.S. Thank you all for your hard work and support. You're all very sharp!

I agree with HansH, the seriousness of the situation in my opinion now is less about toady+ and more about srs and his well being. If srs has decided to call it quits then I for one will respect that decision, even though I think it will be a great and immense loss.    But I would really just like some acknowledgement that he is ok and perhaps he is taking a sabbatical or something

There are a lot of people here who have the utmost respect for srs and his talents in bringing us this program, and I hope he respects the rest of us enough to at least just let us know that he is ok.

I hope this program lives on as I have own a PPC since the original Windows CE and this is one of the most versatile, fun and useful plug-in I have ever had the pleasure to use.

Hope Srs keeps up this awesome work.

Ps. kudos to all you skinners as well thanks I've learned a lot.

I appreciate the work SRS has done on this program todate.

However, at this time, I am shutting down and uninstalling my versiuon of TodayPlus. I regret having to take this action, as I have appreciated the flexibility and creativity this program has afforded me (and many others, it appears).

Unfortunately, I must plan forward from this point as if TP will expire at the end of the month. Just as my business mut plan for transitions when we sell off a unit and we have a known cutover date, it is now time for us to all start looking at other Today screen utilities.

While I would be thrilled to know this program will continue, I plan to wait for a stable, non-expiring release before I reconsider this program.

Finally, those skins I have worked on in the past, AximSlide X3 and AximSlide X5, should now be considered non-supported and public domain. If anyne wished to continue on with them, they are more than welcome to modify them in any way they wish to...

I regret having to walk away from TP...  and I will miss the community of this forum. I wish you all the best

This weekend i did the same :(  I did a hard reset and installed most of my old plug-ins. I found some new ones, to replace TD+

The only thing i miss are the sunrise/sunset and the moonphases, but those aren't really essential. My today screen looks almost the same as with td+ .... and i dont have to make a skin :)

I'm really disappointed that we can't use td+ anymore. I was a good project while it lasted.....

Many of us are thinking about the same thing, so I am wondering what other softwares you have found to replace T+.  Do you mind sharing that with us?

Thnx!

Well, this is terrible. I finally find the best today plug-in of all time and it looks like it's going to die.

I have only been using T+ for about a week now and I love it. However, from what I have read it's going to expire at the end of Feb and that is a shame.

Well, for what it's worth, I truely hope that some one can finda way to breathe some life back into TodayPlus or srs for that matter.
