Title: WM5 - WAD - What to do?
Post by: jjcousin on June 20, 2006, 03:52:01 PM
Hi all,

I came here because of a post in the PDAPhoneHome forum (I believe).  I am a new PPC user - Phone Edition PPC-6700 and I am trying (for 3 weeks now) to find a great TODAY solution.  TP is INCREDIBLE.  I've been playing with PocketBreeze and SPB PocketPlus.  They are good, but this is incredible...sort of.  A couple of questions:

- I tried Hammerskin but with WM5 it's too long because of the task bar.  Is there a shorter version?
- Are there any good WM5 skins?
- Someone posted (today) that they use WAD with TP.  How well does this work and which skin do you use with TP?
- TP seems to run (switch tabs and such) pretty slow (though it quickly brings up activities and tasks when tapped).  Is this WM5 or anyones (2 seconds to change tabs).
- Doesn't TP show CONTACTS?

- Also, what's the general feel for TP?  Soon to be dead?

Thanks in advance,

John

Hi jjcousin, and welcome to the TP forum!  :D

I think I was the one talking about using WAD & TP together!  I use a few different WAD skins, and have some configured with a seperate "virtual page" where TP lives.  I get bored with the same ol thing, so I switch between 3 TP skins.  UniSkin 2.0 (Mine), HammerSkin (Wichtel), & 2B-VGA (Geezer).

As for contacts, I don't believe we've ever done this with TP, but on another virtual page within WAD, I have PocketBreeze as a Today Plugin, and ContactBreeze as a tab, which is a great contact manager!

In another configuration, I use a WAD skin that has most things I use, and made an RSS only TP skin that I use on a VP.

So you see, I use many different combinations depending on my mood / needs for that week.  Between them, I can cover all of my needs!
As for TP going away any time soon, well, we asked that same question a year ago, and before that too....  Hmmm!

There is a reduced QVGA version by UK_skinner. (http://forums.jhollin1138.com/viewtopic.php?t=1695&highlight=hammerskin+reduced)

Thanks for responding, guys.

I like the idea of WAD because I think I'll get bored, too.
TP is so neat because it has it all.  Well, except for contacts.

It's too bad someone doens't do something more like it.  I guess PB and SPB PP are pretty close, though.  Hate to have to buy both.

I will try out the reduced QVGA as suggested, too.

Thanks!

John

What is 'WAD'?

Another question...

My wife has an IPaq Media Companion (rungs WM2003) and I loaded this up with default skin and it worked like a charm right out of the virtual box.

With my XV6700 (PPC Phone Verizon) it won't update the weather...

I set them up exactly the same way.  It just says updating and then comes back with no data.

Do you have any ideas about why it may not be able to update?  (I was on WIFI with both of them).

Thanks in advance,
John

EDIT - WAD is Wisbar Advance Desktop:

WAD is a lot like TP, but doesn't yet have as many features.  It also runs from a skin file, but is much more user friendly then TP!

As I said before, WAD is what TP should have become if SRS had still been around!  WAD uses menus by tap-n-hold, and adds images, text, sys meters & clocks.  It also has drag-n-drop ability.  It then writes this info to the skin file.

WAD is still a few features behind TP, but the developer is very active!

Are you getting any error or failed messages?
If you have them both setup the same, and one works, maybe it has something to do with WM5!  I can't help there as I'm still on 2003SE myself..
Try clearing the buffer folder, and updating again!

On some WM5 Devices is no Buffer folder after the Installation of TD+. If there is no Buffer Folder, make one with the Explorer and try another sync.

Aaah.  I don't get any error messages on the Today screen when updating.  But, when in the config util, I DO in various places.  Definitely when I hit the CLEAR BUFFER button.  And, YES!  It says Directory not Found.  I created a folder called BUFFER in My Documents.

I previously tried in Program Files\TodayPlus but that didn't seem to do it.

After creating it in My Documents (my Base Path is set to there), it didn't error.   And after soft boot VOILA!!!!

You guys are AWESOME!!!

A couple more questions if you have time:

What is BASE PATH?
What is the RADAR application?  I put in My Documents\Radar and no updates, either.  I tried to run RADAR.exe by itself (for kicks) and lots of errors come up.

Cool!  Glad you got it.  Wichtel was always very good with coming up with the right answers!

For some RSS url's, 2RSS.com (http://www.2rss.com/cat2_37_p7.html) has more then most anyone will ever need!  8)

Can you think of any other WM5 issues there were/are?
What URLs (an example) do you put in the RSS area (newbie obviously).

Base Path is the Path to your TodayPlus installation Directory such as: ProgramFiles\TodayPlus

For the moment I have no other WM5 issues. It runs without Problems. Some German users have Problems with the refresh of the Hammerskin Mainpage, but I have no answer yet.

I have some RSS Links but all in German

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing what you have done.

I am frustrated in terms of everything I have tried over the years. I have to agree with your comments on a different post that I too have not quite been satisfied. I love the all in one idea for this app and my device isn't bogged down by running it either. Sure there are wonderful apps out there and believe me I own every last one. However, a few months ago I decided to look this back up after several years of not using it. I really really like it still-- believe it or not.

Yes, it really is a neat plugin.

If you still have the patience, there's a few things I can't get right:

1)  Radar doesn't work.  I put the RADAR exe in My Documents\Radar like the instructions said, but it doesn't show anything.
2) On the "calendar" icon that shows the page with 2 calendars and "Appointments" nothing shows up.  In slider skin, my "Agenda" does work and show the appts...any ideas on that one?
3) I don't have any scroll bars for the RSS feed text...

Thanks in advance,

John

What skin are you using?  Is it my UniSkin?

1) Make sure Radar.exe, and Radar.txt are both in the \My Documents Folder, and that the Radar.txt has No additional spaces after any line!

2) Problem for this is most likely in the config file setup!  Check that all info in the config is setup properly for each skin you use!

3) If you are using UniSkin, then the scroll is done with the arrows.  I don't have a "scrollbar" in there!

Hope any of that was some help!

I have to agree!  No matter how long I'm away from TP, I wind up coming back to it in one way or the other....

Ok, My (simple) RSS-Only Skin (http://forums.jhollin1138.com/viewtopic.php?p=15690#15690) is posted in the "New Skins / Graphics" forum!  It's pretty simple, but just ask if any questions....
