Title: Initial queries
Post by: terrypin on November 11, 2003, 04:47:45 PM
I installed TodayPlus and have been doing some initial experimenting. As a result I have rather a lot of bug reports and even more questions. Sorry about length of this post therefore, but thought it better than lots of separate ones. I've numbered each point for convenience.

1.Apparent bug reports
----------------------
1.1 Occasionally I would just see a brief message flash up (possibly just saying 'Fatal'?) and my 2210 would then automatically soft-reset

1.2 When I tapped the box on the left of a task in Agenda, (which I was guessing would mark the task as complete?), I got a message that styed around long enought to note. It said: Fatal øøø (0x0406), Terminated abnormally by an exception, Closing program. I tapped OK and got: Shell, An unhandled error has occurred in the shell. Attempting to restart the shell. I tapped OK and got an automatic soft reset.

1.3 Temperature was set to Fahrenheit, but London showing values like 12, 13, which are clearly Centigrade.

1.4 When vertical scroll bar is present, it obscures some of TP's control icons.

1.5 In Weather, Humidity = 100%

1.6 In 'Monitor', third item is 'CF: ?MB', i.e. no numbers. On tapping it, all blank.

1.7 Under 'Monitor' section the Uptime figure is 0:00; and the Soft reset figure is 11/11/03 11:27 (8:19). If I'm right in guessing that is supposed to be when I last reset, then it's wrong. (I reset many times today, the last time only a few minutes ago.)

1.8 In Agenda, tapping a task surrounds it with an outline for a while, but nothing else happens. I assume it should open for editing?

Questions on how to configure and use TP
----------------------------------------
2.1 In Weather section, how do I change Home to say London?

2.2 How do I get BBC UK News? (Note: I have no modem or net connection from my PPC; all my downloading has to be done first in cradle.)

2.3 Can I automatically get ALL news topics (for say BBC UK News), rather than activating each topic?

2.4 If so, can I schedule it for specific time each day?

2.5 Can I get shortcut launch icons displayed?

2.6 Can I use other Today plug-ins without risk of conflict (apart from 1.4 above?
For example:
- Pocket Plus; for various features, including escalating alarms, fast close, launch icons (while I'm working on 2.5 above), etc
- Tasks; so I get a summary of how many I have in database, and how many are active.
- NotesToday; for making notes.
- SmallMenu Plus; for cascading menus, etc

2.7 Could I change Clock section so that it's much smaller, e.g. with digital format not analog?

2.8 How do I get SD card and iPAQ File Storage in storage monitor?

2.9 Can I get FREE figures for memory, rather than used? And percentages?

2.10 What do the 5 icons / 1 2 3 4 mean in the Agenda section? Particularly the ones that give  headings of General, Exams, and Countdown? How do I use these?

2.11 How do I update weather forecast?

2.12 Where is the news data stored? Do I have to housekeep it manually?

I'll attempt to relieve a little of the burden on srs by picking up the easy ones here.  On a general note, many of your queries can be answered by reading through previous posts in Help & Support, or reading the skin reference document.

Quote from: terrypin1.3 Temperature was set to Fahrenheit, but London showing values like 12, 13, which are clearly Centigrade.
This is a skin issue, where F is hardcoded.  Amend slider.txt to fix.

Quote from: terrypin1.4 When vertical scroll bar is present, it obscures some of TP's control icons.
The subject of many previous posts, TodayPlus is not designed to work with scrollbars on the Today screen.  Much recent development has been carried out to avoid scrolling and by amending your skin file you can prevent it.

Quote from: terrypin1.5 In Weather, Humidity = 100%
Weather feed "problem" - I've seen it too, but it's all the data we have to go on.

Quote from: terrypin1.6 In 'Monitor', third item is 'CF: ?MB', i.e. no numbers. On tapping it, all blank.
You need to configure the storagepath1 reference in your config.txt.  Also the subject of many posts, but I'll try to put together an FAQ on it.

Quote from: terrypin1.7 Under 'Monitor' section the Uptime figure is 0:00; and the Soft reset figure is 11/11/03 11:27 (8:19). If I'm right in guessing that is supposed to be when I last reset, then it's wrong. (I reset many times today, the last time only a few minutes ago.)
Don't confuse power off with soft reset.  A soft reset is what happens when you stick your stylus in the little hole at the bottom of your iPAQ.  A power off is what happens when you press the off button.

Quote from: terrypin2.1 In Weather section, how do I change Home to say London?
Settings in config.txt.  See the FAQ (http://dark-mojo.com/TodayPlus/viewtopic.php?p=212#212).

Quote from: terrypin2.2 How do I get BBC UK News? (Note: I have no modem or net connection from my PPC; all my downloading has to be done first in cradle.)
So long as you can browse the internet in PIE on your iPAQ when it's in the cradle this should work.  If you can't do that, you have to get that sorted first.  You could try the Brighthand discussion forums for general queries like that (there are many threads on it) or ask it in Off-Topic here.

Quote from: terrypin2.3 Can I automatically get ALL news topics (for say BBC UK News), rather than activating each topic?
Setting in config.txt (see skin reference). At the end of the rss command for the BBC News feed defines how many html files are downloaded for offline viewing.

Quote from: terrypin2.4 If so, can I schedule it for specific time each day?
Not, short of defining a 24-hr interval, in which case it would only update it once per day, but not at a specific time.

Quote from: terrypin2.5 Can I get shortcut launch icons displayed?
Yes.  See rbg08's post (http://dark-mojo.com/TodayPlus/viewtopic.php?p=2201#2201) for a copy of slider.txt with a launcher.

Quote from: terrypin2.6 Can I use other Today plug-ins without risk of conflict (apart from 1.4 above?
Shouldn't be any problems with those.  TodayPlus can do a lot with tasks.

Quote from: terrypin2.7 Could I change Clock section so that it's much smaller, e.g. with digital format not analog?
Yes.  Several posts on this recently.

Quote from: terrypin2.8 How do I get SD card and iPAQ File Storage in storage monitor?
Edits to config.txt and slider.txt.  Skin reference will help or you can ask for specific help if you don't want to play with these files.

Quote from: terrypin2.9 Can I get FREE figures for memory, rather than used? And percentages?
Generally, look in slider.txt for memory, used commands, or similar, and replace with memory, free, with reference to the skin reference file.

Someone else wanna help with the others?  I'm not using the skin actively, right now.

Wow! Thanks arbitrajeu - very helpful. Thanks for going to the trouble to cover so many points. I plainly have MUCH work to do!

But I need to decide whether my best bet might be to wait for the project to mature a bit. Although I'm keen to use TP, I could spend a lot of time floundering around with a 'ground-up' approach, even with all the help here.

A couple of follow-up points:

1.4. At least 1 of those other plug-ins, NotesToday (subject of my earlier post too) will inevitably initiate a scroll bar unless its height was made so small as to make it almost useless. So, if TodayPlus can neveraccommodate scrolling then I think that would rule it out for me.

1.7. Definitely soft-reset, no confusion!

2.2 & 2.3. Yes, I can download items into PIE from TP news section OK (although I wouldn't want to do so in practice, of course - I'd use my PC). What I'd like to do is have TP download say all BBC UK news, so that I can catch up on that later remotely. I'll explore your suggestion about the 'rss command' to achieve that.

2.6. I removed all plug-ins (except Image), loaded TP, and set it up as well as I could (before trying your other practical suggestions, which I'll tackle soon). I read a few TodayPlus messages with PIE, changed the weather location to London, tried a few display options in the PIM section (if that's what it's called - it's tricky discussing TP in detail without some common terminology!), etc. Then I loaded one plug-in, Pocket Plus. Got fatal message 0x0015, which forced soft reset.

After reset, Pocket Plus was loaded. I set up TP again. Scroll bar now appeared, obscuring TP as discussed. Here's a screenshot:

Thanks again for your hlep - very much appreciated.

I have the soft reset bug in 0.98 as well. I am not using the outlook part at all. Since 0.10.0 seems to have some problems I'd like to wait for the next version. Is there any by-pass in 0.98?

If you don't need the POOM features, you could use a different skin with 0.9.8.

However, I would like to say that I don't have any problems with 0.10.0 - I think some of the issues people are reporting may be artefacts or misunderstandings of the slider skin or features of particular hardware devices.

I humbly suggest that you try 0.10.0 with my Minimal (http://dark-mojo.com/TodayPlus/viewtopic.php?t=658) skin, which doesn't have any Outlook features, so might fit the bill for you.

@arbitrajeu
thanks for your suggestion
but I have made my own skin that works when there is a scrollbar on the right side and has just the features I like. The only problem so far is that the soft reset time is wrong. i really like to keep my skin and make it work.

Looking at the image of your skin, I think it should probably work with 0.10.0.

It's likely that the only changes you will have to make is the formatting of the if...else commands, and things like:

if,battery,100,><,100
...

being replaced by:

calcvar,var27,battery
if,var,var27,,=,100
...

You could give it a try and see how it goes.  If you can't work it out, feel free to post up your config.txt and skin file and I'll take a look.

Thanks, that sounds good. I think I will try it.

QuoteIt's likely that the only changes you will have to make is the formatting of the if...else commands

What formatting needs to be done with the if...else statements?

See srs' release note (http://dark-mojo.com/TodayPlus/viewtopic.php?t=645) for 0.10.0 which describes the new formats of the if...else statements.  Hopefully you can spot the changes relevant to your skin.
