Title: VGA screen & today+
Post by: jkendrick on November 20, 2003, 12:10:44 PM
With the VGA today screen of the Toshiba e805 now a reality can Today+ be used to skin the today screen in VGA?  It would be a perfect way to make a big VGA today screen with large icons.

Keep in mind that even with Tosh everything is not running in VGA mode. Ok there are hacks but without that most of the applications as well as OS screens (today screen includes) still runs in QVGA. We are still some way from the true VGA and effects of VGA on TodayPlus can only be tested only when its becomes part of the OS and today screen runs in VGA natively.

I don't understand why there would be any resistance to the simple asking of the question - can Today+ be used in this mode, and if so, how? And if not, can it be added? Several folks have already chipped in and developed new apps or tweaked older ones to help provide functionality to e805 owners. I'd think VGA support would be a very simple add-in, if it doesn't already work.

I'm tinkering with the settings to try to get things spaced properly, but as jk pointed out, some input on how to do it would be great. 'True VGA' is here now, regardless of Toshiba's failed attempt to lock out other functions.

I remember back in the Brighthand thread that someone wanted to rotate their display.  If I remember correctly srs had limited the display to 240.  I would think with the release of the e80x, and more models to follow, the limitation will be adjusted.

yes, currently the width is hardcoded to 240

And will that change anytime soon? A version for e805 users to adjust their skin/text width settings?

I tried changing all the "240" strings to "480" in the slider.txt file but it had no effect.  The only bug with the current version is that the hemiscreen to the right of the plugin doesn't get updated.

That, and images are exceedingly small.

If the hardcoding of the 240 width can be fixed, the customizability of this program will make it an ideal program for any resolution, provided someone out there is willing to make 480 skins.

the next version should support variable widths, although I haven't tested it with any resolution other than 240....

you can also probably use larger weather icons to take up the whole screen width..

I have some 64x64 weather.com icons that I'm attaching below:

Unfortunately they don't work.  All I get are circles with diagonal lines through them where the icons are supposed to be.

That's what you get when you need to refresh your weather information.

Thank you!  I see them now.  Do you know how I can get them to not be crowded together and overlapping?

for that, you will need to adjust the skin, and the x,y coords of the weather icons.

Hi there... I wan't sure if the latest ver 0.11 supports vga on the e805?

i can't seem to get it to work. I tried the 64x64 weathe  icons.

i'm also using the recombinant skin - not sure if it's the reason?

Thanks!

You would need to go into the skin and change all of the x and y positions to take advantage of the larger screen.

Does that include even the default slider skin? Or are you just referring to the recombinant skin?

In the changelog info it says the widths aren't specified or something to that effect, didn't know if that meant it would automatically adjust or just that there is no specific limitation.

Thanks!

All screen elements require a specific x and y location to be properly positioned on screen.  Althought the new version has no width/height limitations skins will still need to be created for these larger screens.  The default slider skin is still designed for a 240x320 screen.  It does not dynamically resize for a larger screen.

Maybe in the future, the skin commands could be modified to detect the screen size and automatically use larger/smaller icons and provide more or less information on the screen.  Then it would be possible to create self scaling skins.
