Difference between VGA and Real-VGA??

I'm trying to use this skin on an untweaked X50v.
The QVGA version works but really looks bad -- horribly pixellated and cloudy.
I thought that one of the VGA skins would be an improvement but both the VGA and the real-VGA are too big to fit on the Today screen without scrolling and I really can't tell the difference in the two.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
