I've been thinking about all this srs stuff and the fact that he has created a very powerful tool which he has just 'abandoned'.

I have a hunch (no facts, just supposition), that he meant to sell it when it got to a slightly more developed stage.

All the arguments over the expiry of the betas may have been given as a reason for srs going away, but look at it this way:

srs wants to recoup money for all his time investment (as most would)

he starts releasing betas to get beta testers to assist his development

the expiry means that he will be able to sell a final version as all usable betas expire

people testing get annoyed about the expiry dates (it isn't clear that he plans to sell it so people only see that their time skinning can be wasted)

someone overcomes the expiry so srs sees he will not be able to sell it

srs walks away in disgust leaving everyone with a working beta

I could be wrong, but how about it?

@grayme:

Yep, I believe you are wrong.

I was involved in TodayPlus way back when it was just a thread on Brighthand.  SRS always stated several things.
  • That he was on a college break when he asked for beta testers.
  • That he was not interested in selling it.  Selling It would force him to have to then support it
  • That he stopped working on TodayPlus and visiting the TodayPlus forum do to a "family issues"
I don't believe SRS abandonment of TodayPlus was due to fact that he wanted to sell it.  I feel what happened is, of course including his "family issues" thing, even thou he wasn't selling TodayPlus he was still forced to support it.  That was really the one thing he never really wanted to do, was to have to spend too much time on, especially when his break was over.  When the fallout of the expiration date came out, he took that as a good time to leave TodayPlus behind

It has been nearly two years now since the expiration date fallout.  During that time, the only word we have ever received from SRS was a handful of post over at Brighthand.

At this point I am sure SRS has graduated from college and is off on his career choice.  Like before, I am sure he still doesn't have time to support TodayPlus.

Well it had to happen sometime ;)

I just find it extremely strange that something SO powerful has been left to drift unattended by its author.

Why hasn't MicroSoft bought it up, put it into its operating system (it is far more powerful than their today screen?

Why hasn't anyone else taken the idea, written their own and made a mint?

It's all too weird!

I think it became a burden more then a programming pleasure to SRS. because even he didn't want to sell it not being oblicated giving support people where asking to much from him. I think they still do!

I have followed the TodayPlus drama from the beginning too at brighthand.

I hope his college wend well. That's more importent then meet up to others standards for a free app.
